POPLEY in Sherborne St John, now district of Basingstoke
Named from 'Popley Field Farm' ('Popley Fields House' on the latest OS map, SU636546), no references to which have been discovered before the mention of 'Popley Field' in the Sherborne St John Tithe Award of 1840. Cf POPHAM. There are field names in Hampshire containing 'popple/pobble' and the like 'pebble, flint', eg 1560 'Poble londe' in Wootton St Lawrence and 1448 'Popehull' later 'Popple Field' (Field 1972) in Curdridge. However, earlier 20th century OS maps show our place as 'Poplar Field Farm'; and some of the older names may include references to poplars or even to poppies (cf Smith, English Place Name Elements II: 70). It is not clear which is the genuine source of the name, but the place does not appear to be on a patch of Clay-with-flints.
