POULNER, district of Ringwood
The second element is 'ora' or 'ofer' both words for 'bank, slope' discussed
by Gelling (1984: 173-82). 'Ofer' appears to mean 'flat topped ridge' and
'ora'='slope, foot of a slope'. The topography of east Ringwood favours the
latter. The first element is obscure. If it is not an unknown personal name it
may be Old English 'polleie'='pennyroyal'. This well known medicinal mint grows
in sandy damp places, for which the local soils of the Bursledon Association, a
sandy loam subject to waterlogging, would provide a good habitat.
