PRIVETT
Old English 'pryfet'='privet'. The entry in annal 755 of the Old English Chronicle means 'at the watercourse of Privett', where Sigebeorht, exiled king of Wessex, was killed by a herdsman. Since there is no stream at Privett, it is not clear what is meant, but Grundy (1922: 54-5) has surmised that a 'floda' was a place subject to flash flooding.
