QUARLEY
Possibly hypothetical Old English 'Cweornleah'='(hand)mill clearing'; sense unclear, cf CURBRIDGE. It is curious that no Middle English forms are on record containing both 'Qu-' and medial '-n-'. But 'corn/curn' is common in Middle English for 'cweorn' and the various forms may be reconciled with such an intermediary. Some spellings suggest the genitive plural 'cweorna' or the genitive singular of the related word 'cweorne'; but forms with no medial vowel are in the majority.
