RAMSDEAN in Langrish
The spread of medieval forms is ambiguous between 'denu'='valley' and 'dun'='hill'; some forms may refer to the hamlet and others to Ramsdean down. Analogies with place names elsewhere suggest that the first element is likely to be Old English 'hraefn'='raven' (or a man's name of the same form), especially in the case of the 'dun'. But it could as well be 'ramm'='ram'. The spellings also suit the form of the Old English word 'hramsa'='ramsons, wild garlic' that appears in place names, as Gover suggests. No certainty is possible.
