REDBRIDGE in Millbrook
Hypothetical Old English 'Hreodbrycg'='reed bridge', probably in the sense 'bridge where reeds grew'. The earlier name was 'reed ford', and it is hard to escape the conclusion that a bridge was built to carry the Dark Age ancestor of the A35 over the river Test sometime close to 900 A.D.

Redbridge, called anciently Vadum Arundinis by Beda, which he interprets Reed-ford, and in short Redford. It changed its Name when the Bridge was set up.
Redbridge is no Market-Town, but is of more Note than many in this County that are; for by having Ships built here for his Majesty and Merchants, this Place hath lately arrived at a prosperous Condition.
