RIP(P)LINGTON, tithing of East Meon
Hypothetical Old English, apparently 'Rippelingtun'='farm of the elongated thicket', see Smith (English Place Name Elements II: 84). I assume this since the modern dialect reflex of the hypothetical word 'rippel' denotes a thicket. For the formation, cf Smith (op cit I: 296 (para. 6(c)).
