Coates 1989 ROCKFORD, manor in Ellingham Too early to be the Anglo Norman name 'Roquefort'='strong crag'; it was a manor before 1086. It is not obvious what to make of the 12th century forms, which suggest confusion with early forms of the 'Rochfords' in Essex and Worcestershire; the rest point to hypothetical Old English 'Hrocaford'='rooks' ford', cf ROCKBOURNE and the Domesday Book manor of ROCKSTEAD in that parish. The ford is over Dockens Water, a left tributary of the Avon. |
