commentary: Single stone segmental arch using stone from Purbeck and the Isle of Wight, designed by Robert Mylne, 1783. There was an earlier bridge which:-
required very little pulling down
A panel in an abutment reads:-
[ REBUILT FROM THE FOUNDATIONS BY THE COUNTY ANNO MDCCLXXXIII MYLNE ARCHT. ]
There was a skirmish in the Civil War, here, 1643.
The bridge was rebuilt and widened by A E Farr, working to the county surveyor, 1929-31. The 18th century design followed exactly, but strengthened internally with reinforced concrete.
