ROTHER, river
Originally called hypothetical 'Scir' probably Old English 'bright', but see further SHERFIELD-ON-LODDON on the problem of names apparently containing this element or the homophonous word meaning 'shire' (the Rother briefly constitutes the boundary between Hampshire and Sussex East of Sheet). The present name is a back formation from that of 'Rotherbridge' bridge and hundred in Sussex (1086 'Redrebrige') 'cattle bridge'.

The Rother, tributary of the Arun is shown from Midhurst in West Sussex; the river shown by Petersfield is probably the southern branch of the Wey; remember that the Rother flows by Petersfield, but in the other direction.
