SARSON, farm in Amport
This is an unusual name in several respects. It is first found as 1203 'Anne' (cf ABBOT'S ANN), said in this Curia Regis roll to be held by Richard 'le Salvage' (the surname is 'savage'; 1242 Anna Savage). The name stabilizes in the late 13th century as (eg 1269) 'Sauvageton'='Savage's farm', like MONXTON a very late formation with Middle English 'tun'='farm' (cf Smith, English Place Name Elements II: 193, 198). The modern name is an extreme attrition of this (1597 'Sarston').
