Coates 1989 SEGENWORTH, farms in Titchfield Old English 'Sugga's curtilage', either in an '-ing-' form or a genitive in '-an'. The '-e-' forms are in evidence from the early 16th century (1530 'Segengworth'). The man's name apparently consists of the Old English word for 'hedge sparrow'. But there is no parallel in the entire English place name record which would license the interpretation of this name as 'hedge sparrow(s') curtilage'. |
