SHAVE WOOD in Minstead
An ancient wood, predating the INCLOSURES, in the New Forest management category 'Ancient and Ornamental'. Contains a common, but unexplained, form of Old English 'sceaga' Middle English 'schawe'='wood', 'strip of woodland on field border'. Also in 'Shaves Green' (1540 'Shaves greene' (Ellingham)) and 'Shave Hat' near Bratley in Broomy Walk/Minstead.
