SHEDFIELD, modern parish carved out of Droxford
Old English 'scid' meant 'split wood, billet', 'shingle' or 'board', and Ko'keritz (1940: 179-80) suggests that Shide (IOW) has a name embodying this word in the sense 'footbridge'. The present name means 'open land associated with more than one scid' and the precise interpretation is unclear. A Roman road (Margary 420) crosses four minor streams close to Shedfield (within the parish). Maybe fording them was assisted by boards at some stage in their existence.
