SHERBORNE ST JOHN
Probably hypothetical Old English 'Scire burna'='(the) bright stream'. The forms suggest this; on the other hand the proximity of 'Shirlen's Copse' in Newnham (1365 'Shirlond') and 'Shear Down Farm' in Hannington (1334 'Scirdoune') leave a nagging suspicion that the word 'scir'='shire' might be involved in some way because of the proximity of the county boundary with Berkshire. See the discussion under SHERFIELD-ON-LODDON.
The manor was held by Robert de Sancto Johanne in 1242, and the form of 1167 may suggest earlier ownership by the same family. Distinguished from MONK SHERBORNE.
