SHERFIELD ENGLISH
Probably Old English 'bright open land', cf SHERFIELD-ON-LODDON. However the whole problem of names of this type is reviewed there. The manor was held by Richard le Engleys 'the Englishman' in 1325. It is uncertain whether any contrast with FRENCHMOOR is intended. The manorial specifier is mainly to distinguish it from Sherfield-on-Loddon.
