Hypothetical Old English 'Sceaptun'='sheep farm', a frequent name type. 'Bellinger' is from the name of the lord in 1296, Ingelram 'Berenger' the modern form showing dissimilation of 'r' to 'l'. It is not known from which other 'Shipton(s)' it is distinguished (possibly Shipton Gorge (Dorset)).
