SHOLING in Itchen
The name is first recorded rather late, and it is not fully clear whether it is an '-ingas' folk name or a singular '-ing' name. If the former, the name may be hypothetical Old English 'Sceolingas'='people associated with a person called Sceolh' (a nickname either meaning 'crooked' or 'squint eyed'); if the latter, an interpretation 'sloping place' is possible. The village lay on land between two streams, gently shelving SW to the place where they join. But the universal medieval spelling with '-ll-' speaks against both possibilities.
