commentary: Portsmouth was once protected by massive artillery style fortifications. The first shutter telegraph station was at the foot of the glacis in front of the bastions and ravelins on the SE of the town, where it met Southsea Common; 5 miles from the Portsdown Hill Telegraph; the end of the line. The station was moved when the town expanded and houses and smoke spoiled the line of sight. Its new position was at the Litte Morass, close by where Clarence Pier now stands.
