SOUTHSEA
Although the name seems transparent, there is no obvious reason why a place on land should be called 'south sea'. The name is at first that of the Tudor castle, and we must suppose it is so named from being beside Spithead rather than Langstone or Portsmouth Harbours unless the '-sea' has been abstracted from other local names like 'Portsea, Hilsea, Horsea' and treated as an element.
