SPURSHOLT, house in Romsey
[Sparsholt] ... hypothetical Old English 'Spearresholt'='managed wood producing spears, spars, rafters', a useful appurtenance close to a large town and military centre like Winchester. This name has influenced that of 'Spursholt' in Romsey, which was 1227 'Perscete' (hypothetical Old English 'pirigesceat'='pear tree nook'), via a form 1601 'Spurshott'.
