Coates 1989 STAKES in Farlington, suburb of Portsmouth Originally 'Frendstaple'. Apparently Old English 'Freondesstapol'='friend's post', or perhaps 'Friend's', ie: a personal name. Possibly the same element in the plural ('freonda'). The precise meaning is unclear. Ekwall gives a more complicated - and less satisfactory - origin in the personal name 'Freomund' reduced rather drastically. The modern name is from the family of 'Stake' holding the manor in 1248. They apparently gave their name to the place rather than taking it from it. |
