STAMSHAW (STAMPSEY)
There are odd transformations later, eg 1294 'Scampnesho' 1333 'Stamelleshou' about 1600 'Stampsey'. Old English 'heel of land, promontory, marked with a (stem- or stern-) post'. The first element appears to be an hypothetical Old English 'stamn' not attested, but related to the 'stemn' that gives us 'stem(-post)' and paralleled by German 'Stamm'.
