STEVENTON
A possible '-ingtun' derivative of an unrecorded hypothetical Old English man's name 'Stifa'='stiff', as Gover speculates. However, the name recurs at 'Steventon' (Berkshire) 'Stevington' (Bedfordshire, Essex) 'Steeton' (Yorkshire, West Riding, twice) and 'Stewton' (Lincolnshire). Much more likely therefore hypothetical Old English 'Styf(ic)ing-tun'='farm at the place of grubbed-up trees' (see hypothetical 'styfic' in Smith (English Place Name Elements II: 166)).
