commentary: Stokes Bay Railway and Pier Co, later LSWR, from Gosport to Stokes Bay, Hampshire, owned pier for Isle of Wight ferries, authorized 14 August 1855, opened 6 April 1863, last train 31 October 1915.
The company was incorporated to build a railway by Act of Parliament:-

The line was sold to the Admiralty in 1922; the link with pier replaced by narrow gauge railway.
