Coates 1989 STONE in Fawley The place mentioned in Bede is now usually placed here; though in earlier writings STONEHAM was preferred, presumably only because it was a more significant and better known place. Stone is right for the story, since the Isle of Wight is involved, and Stone is at the coastal end of a local Roman road (Margary 423). It is quite probable that a Roman period artefact is commemorated in the name. 'Stansore Point' nearby may be an early derivative from this name ('bank/shore of Stone'). |
