SWAMPTON, Domesday Book manor in Kingsclere hundred, tithing of St Mary Bourne
On the face of it Old English 'swan farm'. There is no trace of the medial '-e-' which would make 'swains' farm' likely. The forms in '-mp-' are, however, inexplicable starting from hypothetical 'Swantun'. Most likely therefore hypothetical 'Swammtun'='mushroom/toadstool farm'; this element has not been recorded in place names before.
