SYDMONTON, modern parish carved out of Kingsclere
Certainly Old English 'Sidemann's farm'. A man of this name was Sydeman minister who signed the Ecchinswell charter of 931 (12th century transcript) . Grundy speculates (1927: 260) that it was he who gave his name to this village. Romsey Abbey held the manor and presumably the advowson, of Sydmonton in 1086; Sydeman the priest may have held it of an earlier abbot. In 1586 we find the interesting corruption 'Sidemountaine'; this was a time when speculative etymology was a popular pastime among the learned (and semi-learned).
