TATCHBURY, fort in Copythorne
The second element is 'byrig' the dative case of Old English 'burh'='fort';
there is an ancient fortification here. The first is quite unclear. It may be a
hypothetical man's name 'Taccea' derived from hypothetical 'tacca'='teg, young
sheep' or the known personal name 'Tacca, Taecca'. There are two medieval
spellings with 'Th-' dating from 1272, 1475, which might suggest the first
element is Old English 'thaec'='roof, thatch'; the place name would then be
'thatched manor'. If so, all the other spellings and modern form would have to
be put down to Anglo Norman influence.
