TIMSBURY, parish, later in Michelmersh
Hypothetical Old English 'Timberburh' or '(ge)Timbreburh'; the meaning is thus uncertain as between 'fort' and 'manor house' and 'built of timber' or 'marked with a timber building'. Only archaeological findings can elucidate this. Its low lying site is clearly not that of a prehistoric hillfort.
The forms in '-s' which eventually prevail (strangely, in view of how transparent the form of the name was) are found from 1236 ('Timbresbury'). This suggests that the place name was taken as including a personal name of a possessor or tenant, leading me to think that 'manor' is the likelier interpretation. But this is not certain.
