TITCHFIELD
Old English 'open land associated with (hypothetical) Ticcea', a man's name
derived from the Old English 'ticcen'='kid'. Otherwise, if an alternation of
forms found in an early 10th century boundary clause for Ampfield is to be taken
seriously 'ticcenesfelda/ticcefeldes' the present name may actually be
hypothetical 'Ticcefeld'='kids' open land', a two stem nominal compound
involving the hypothetical noun 'ticce'. (Cf TICHBORNE, TISTED.) But in an
important note, Finberg (1964a: 58) observes that the place in whose bounds
'ticcanfelde' occurs is stated to be in the Isle of Wight. If we remove this
form from the list above, the spread of spellings becomes consistent.
