TOTTON, in Eling, suburb of Southampton
Hypothetical Old English 'Tot(t)ingtun'='farm of Tot(t)a'. It is usual to identify the Domesday Book manor of 'Dodintune' in Redbridge hundred with this place too, though not on the linguistic evidence. There was an actual 'Doda' who held the extinguished manor of 'Bedecote' in the New Forest before 1066. On some late maps (1817) a form with an unrounded vowel 'Tatton' is found (cf BREAMORE).
