ELDON (UPPER and LOWER), farms in King's Somborne, extinct parish
Old English 'Ella's hill' or 'Ella's valley'. Since the church is at 'Upper Eldon' perhaps the first is the true origin. But perhaps there have always been two settlements, 'hill' and 'valley', and the two names have fallen together phonetically. Upper Eldon is on the chalk downs; 'Lower Eldon' is at the head of a very marked valley.
