WYKE, three farms in St Mary Bourne
Old English 'wic'='dependent farm, dairy farm' (1236 'Wikes' possibly
represents an early plural, but there are unexplained plural forms of elements
like this in early Middle English). We find 1280 'Wyke Prioris' (ie: of the
prior of St Swithin, Winchester, who held Hurstbourne Priors) and 1313 'Wyke
Daundely' commemorating a lord of the manor with the surname
'd'Andelys'.
