VYNE (THE), manor in Sherborne St John
Self explanatory. It has been said that this is the earliest English name coined specifically to designate a house. The estate was previously called 'Sherborne Cowdray' (1272 'Syrburne Coudray') from the family of Fulk de Coudray who held it in 1251. There are numerous places in Normandy called 'Coudraie'='hazel coppice', and Gover's speculation that it may have to do with 'Cowdray' in Midhurst (Sussex) may be unnecessary. But he asserts that the family of Peter de Coudray who gave their name to 'Cowdray Copse' in Herriard actually did come from Cowdray in Sussex.

... Not far from this Town [Basingstoke] the Lord Sands had a very neat Seat, called the Vine, from the Vine planted by it, or near it probably; which, tho' they rarely bring any Fruit to perfection in our cold Clime, yet have been cultivated in Gentlemen's gardens ever since: Probus the Emperor gave Liberty to bring them into Britain.

Neere unto this [Basing] house, the Vine sheweth it selfe, a verie faire place, and Mansion House of the Baron Sands, so named of the vines there, which wee have had in Britaine, since Probus the Emperours time, rather for shade than fruit.
