WATERLOOVILLE, modern parish
Takes its name from 'The Heroes of Waterloo' inn on the road from Portsmouth to Guildford (modern A3). 'Ville' names enjoyed a brief vogue in the early to mid part of the 19th century, cf 'Cliftonville' in Hove (Sussex) and Margate (Kent) 'Rosherville' in Gravesend (Kent) and 'Frithville' (Lincolnshire, Holland). The use of a fashionable French element in this particular name seems rather spiteful. The place was earlier 1759 'Whateland End' 1817 'Waitland End' attested too late for certainty about its origin.
