WEST MEON
... The river name [Meon] is obscure in origin, but probably related to that
of the 'Main' in West Germany. The river gave its name to a provincia of the
early English invaders (about 750 'meanuarorum prouincia; Meonware' meant
'dwellers at/by Meon'). The historical significance of this people has been much
debated, as has their apparent affinity with Sussex.

Just below you, to the East [from Lomer Beacon], you look down upon the
village of Exton; and you can see up this valley (which is called a Bourne too)
as far as West-Meon, and down it as far as Soberton. Corhampton, Warnford,
Meon-Stoke and Droxford come within these two points; so that here are six
villages on this bourne within the space of about five miles.
