WEST MEON
... The river name [Meon] is obscure in origin, but probably related to that of the 'Main' in West Germany. The river gave its name to a provincia of the early English invaders (about 750 'meanuarorum prouincia; Meonware' meant 'dwellers at/by Meon'). The historical significance of this people has been much debated, as has their apparent affinity with Sussex.

Just below you, to the East [from Lomer Beacon], you look down upon the village of Exton; and you can see up this valley (which is called a Bourne too) as far as West-Meon, and down it as far as Soberton. Corhampton, Warnford, Meon-Stoke and Droxford come within these two points; so that here are six villages on this bourne within the space of about five miles.
