WORLDHAM (EAST and WEST), originally two parishes; now one
One manor is recorded in Domesday Book, but the two places are distinguished
in the 13th century. Very likely hypothetical Old English 'Waerhildeham'='estate
of Waerhild', an unrecorded but perfectly regular woman's name. Ekwall's
ingenious, but almost hilarious, alternative involves an hypothetical Old
English 'werhielde'='wood grouse (ie: capercaillie) slope', but this once
thickly forested country is not capercaillie habitat and surely can never have
been.
Records from the 13th century suggest that an alternative name form arose:
1280 'Wordeleham' still on record in 1789 'Ward-le-ham'.
