WHERWELL, village and priory
Hypothetical Old English 'Hwerwiellas' literally 'cauldron springs or streams', hence 'bubbling streams'. The church and priory are on an island formed by the multiple channels of the merging rivers Test and Dever. The eddies in the Test are well known.
