WHITCHURCH
Old English '(the) white church'. The most likely interpretation is that the
church was whitewashed. But Bede noted that 'Whithorn' in Wigtownshire was
called about 730 'hwitan aerne' or 'candida casa'='white building' merely
because it was stone built.

Whitchurch, a Mayor, Market, and Borough-Town, not taken Notice of by Camden,
from whence we may conclude that either it is of no great Antiquity, or that it
was of little or no Repute in his Time. It is governed by a Mayor, and chooses
Burgesses for Parliament, who are in this present Session 1716, General
Carpenter and Thomas Vernon Esq;
The Town is in a mean Condition, yet has a Market on [ ] weekly, and two
Fairs on October 23, and Whitsun-Monday.
