Coates 1989 WHITENAP, suburb of Romsey Old English/Middle English '(at the) white harp'. Old English 'hearpe' is found in several place names, and as a final element is usually taken to mean '(salt-)sieve'. Whitenap is some way from the main branch of the river Test even if this were tidal in the Middle Ages and thus could sustain salterns. The river is not now tidal above the marshes north of Totton. |
