WINKTON in Christchurch
Old English 'Wineca's farm', the man's name being a pet form of a name in 'Wine-'='friend'. Morris in his edition of the Hampshire Domesday identifies this place with 'Weringetone' which is quite out of tune with all the other spellings. He also has to juggle with the hundred boundary; 'Weringetone' was in Shirley whilst Christchurch and Winkton were in Edgegate.
