WINNALL, suburb on Winchester
The first spelling is typical of the earlier records, so the place is probably hypothetical Old English 'Wilighealh'='willow nook'. (The West Saxon dialect form 'welig' recorded in the Isle of Wight and Berkshire, does not seem to be responsible for this name.) Winnall stands on the left bank of the river Itchen where willows are likely enough. The later forms either arise by dissimilation of 'l' to 'n' or testify that the name is really hypothetical 'Wiligenhealh' with an adjectival form as the first element.
