Possibly hypothetical Old English 'Wulfhilde leah'='Wulfhild's wood', containing an Old English female personal name. A Wulfhild was associated with Hyde Abbey in the early-mid 11th century. The loss of an 'l' between two others is not surprising. The modern name contains an analogical reformation after the word 'wood'.
