Coates 1989 WOODGARSTON, farm in Wootton St Lawrence The earliest record, if reliable, shows that the name was originally Old English 'serfs' paddock'. More specifically, names derived from Old English 'wealh' may often be taken as early names denoting enslaved, or at least subjugated Britons (cf Cameron 1980). In this connection, it is significant that Roman buildings are recorded in this parish. The later place name is 'wood paddock'; either a renaming has taken place, or the original name has been analogically altered to suit the parish name. |
