WOODMANCOTT or WOODMANCOTE
Hypothetical Old English 'wudumannacotu'='woodmen's cottages/hovels', a name paralleled in Sussex, for instance, and maybe having the same import as 'Woodcote' (eg in Bramdean). Still adjacent to woodland. The parish may have been carved out of the Candover estate(s); it can scarcely be an ancient parish/manor with such a name, suggesting a temporary or permanent residence for those performing a special task for the manor, even though it was one by the time of Domesday Book.
