WORTING
The form of 960 appears, in the light of the medieval developments, to be a good Old English form, but what it might mean is uncertain. Names of this form are standardly '-ingas' derivatives of personal names, and are usually, on that basis, called 'folk names'. No personal name of the right shape is known, however. We must guess that a hypothetical nickname 'Wyrta' based on 'wyrt'='herb, vegetable' existed. Ekwall points out that a name 'Worta' may exist in a 10th century boundary clause; but such a name could not be the base of the present place name because '-ingas' names cannot be conclusively proved ever to show 'i-' umlaut (cf Coates 1984b).
The '-s' forms persist into the early 14th century, though clear forms without it appear already in the 13th century.
