commentary: In October 1805, George Roebuck, surveyor, superintendent of the Admiralty's shutter telegraphs, was instructed to select sites for a new line extending the system to Plymouth. The line branched off the Portsmouth line at:-
station Beacon Hill Telegraph (West Sussex)
station Chalton Hill Telegraph, Clanfield
station Wickham Telegraph, Wickham
station Town Hill Telegraph, West End
station Toothill Telegraph, Nursling and Rownhams
station Bramshaw Telegraph, Bramshaw
station Pistle Down Telegraph (Wiltshire)
and on through Dorset to Plymouth, Devon. The line was reported as almost ready, May 1806.
