a village in Hampshire, 6m N Basingstoke. It was once a city, and is said to have been the place where Arthur was crowned. There are large remains of its walls and ditches, enclosing an area of 80 acres; and two military roads from the S gate, one to Winchester, and the other to Old Sarum.
