Morden's Hampshire 1695

Beacon hills Morden's map of Hampshire, 1695, does not show many beacons, compared to Norden's map of 1595-1607. Norden's map was drafted not long after the Armada, and beacons were an important element in the defence of the country. Morden's map is a century later and beacons are, perhaps, not so important.

Three beacons are indicated on Morden's map, these are marked on the feature map of hills. The one beacon shown by a symbol is drawn as a post with a ladder leading to a fire basket at the top. In the list below the grid references are approximate:-

Bitterne Beacon? (West End parish; SU469139)
Although nameless there is a symbol for this beacon, clearly a post with a ladder leading to a fire basket at the top.

Selthorne Beacon? (Brockenhurst parish; SZ273999) = Selborn Beacon (New Forrest Hundred)
